Care
Caring for knitted dog jumpers
A good knit can last for years of walks. Gentle washing, flat drying and a little de-pilling keep it soft and in shape.

Knits get the most love in our house, which also means the most mud, fur and the occasional puddle. Treated kindly, a good jumper keeps its shape and softness for many winters. Here’s our routine.
Wash less, air more
Wool and wool blends don’t need washing after every walk. Brush off dried mud, shake out fur and hang the jumper somewhere airy overnight. Most smells are gone by morning.
When it does need a wash
Turn the jumper inside out.
Hand wash in cool water, or use the wool cycle at 30°C.
Choose a mild wool detergent and skip the fabric softener.
Never wring or twist the knit.
Dry it flat
Lay the jumper on a clean towel, roll the towel up and press gently to squeeze out the water. Then unroll it, reshape the jumper by hand and leave it flat to dry, away from radiators and direct sun. Hanging a wet knit stretches the neck and sleeves.
Keep pilling in check
Small bobbles appear where harnesses and leads rub. Remove them with a fabric comb or a gentle de-piller every few weeks, and the knit will look new again.
Storing for summer
Fold knits rather than hanging them, and store them clean in a breathable bag. A sprig of lavender or a cedar block helps keep moths away.
